Melbourne researchers have discovered the Nintendo Wii Balance Board may be one of the best and cheapest ways to screen and prevent falls. The University of Melbourne physiotherapy team has shown that Balance Board is an effective tool for testing balance, and more portable and far cheaper than force plates, the current screening machine.
Force plates are very effective but expensive costing tens of thousands of dollars. Very few clinics and hospitals have one which means balance is usually assessed using a doctors rating.
The Balance Board is as accurate as a force plate giving doctors and clinicians an affordable alternative. It is already used in some Australian clinics, particularly for rehabilitation in stroke patients, and in some retirement villages to keep people active.
